Amora joined me back in the cavern, wrapped in a soft, fluffy white robe, unlike the silk the witches wore. A sleepy yawn crossed her face like a child after a long nap.

I pictured her waking up on a bed of supple grass, the warm sun on her skin and a light fall breeze pushing her messy stands from her face. I wanted to be in that meadow with her, napping and rolling around amongst the butterflies and—

Get it together, Rei!

I needed a bottle of wine and a long rest. Clearly, the sleep deprivation was getting to me, and well, it had been a few days since I indulged in many of my… hobbies.

“Rei!” Amora called out. “There you are.”

“I haven’t moved.” I teased. I held my arms out to the side, suggesting I was right where she had left me, despite Yelfen exiting the cavern.

“Oh, I know, but it’s so easy to get turned around in those tunnels! I was expecting the witches to escort me back here, but they said they had a situation at the invisible ward,” she said with a delicate frown.

“Do they expect us to stay here?” I asked, meeting her at the cavern entrance. “I think we’re both due for some fresh air.”

“Yelfen joined me as the other witches were wrapping up. She told me to find you when I was done and to make our way out of the cave system and into their small village. She will meet us at the exit,” she said. “Apparently, we can make it there on our own.”

“Well, I’m all for giving it a try,” I said, peering out into the tunnel. “After you.”

“I think I know the general direction. I’m pretty sure it’s a right up this way, and then a left?”

“You sound very confident.”

“Well…” She trailed off, biting her lip.

“We’ll figure it out,” I said, following her across the rocky, subterranean landscape. “How was the bath?”

“Oh, it was wonderful,” she beamed, despite the fatigue plaguing her. Her eyes lit up for a second before the darkness of the tunnel took hold once more. “The witches were so kind and gentle. It was the best bath I have ever taken. It felt like the salts sucked poison from my veins.”

“That’s good,” I said in a flat tone, not wanting to let Amora’s excitement rub off on me. “Yelfen said it’s normal for you to feel tired after. Let’s just get you to your room for the night, okay?”

Amora agreed and continued leading us the way she came, hesitating before each turn. The tunnels looked much like the cavern I’d waited in, with chunky, glowing crystals and dripping candlesticks lighting up the path. It wasn’t until we reached a fork in the tunnels that she came to a halt.

“So…” Amora said, scratching her head. “This is as far as I can take us.”

“Well, we have a fifty percent chance of getting it right. That’s not too bad.” I pulled a candle free from its perch on the wall and used its light to peek my head into the two tunnels before us.
